For the many people who want to lose weight, the idea of taking a supplement to support weight loss goals is very appealing. Made from spinach leaves, it has recently become very popular in the world wide.
Spinach extract powder is made of concentrated thylakoids found in spinach leaves; these microscopic structures occur naturally in the leaves of chloroplasts of green plant cells. Thylakoids harvest sunlight, providing the necessary fuel for plants to produce carbohydrates; the process is known as photosynthesis. These thylakoid structures could be isolated from the leaves of any green plant, since they are not exclusively present in spinach. The composition of thylakoids looks like this 30% fat and 70% protein, chlorophyll and antioxidants. Thylakoids present in it suppress the activity of an enzyme necessary for digesting fat called lipase.
We already know that spinach is one of the healthiest leafy vegetables, Spinach Extract Powder have all of the benefits of spinach, plus it is said to help you control your appetite.
Spinach extract benefits
Animal studies have shown that taking thylakoid-rich spinach extract may reduce body fat and weight. Human studies of overweight adults have shown that adding 3.7 to 5 grams to a meal reduces appetite for several hours. By suppressing appetite, it may lead to weight loss, if taken regularly over a few months.
One study of overweight women found that eating 5 grams every day, during a 3-month weight loss program, resulted in 43% greater weight loss, compared to a placebo. Body mass index, fat mass and lean mass decreased as well during the study, but there were no significant differences across groups.
It may suppress the brain’s food reward system, reducing cravings, when overweight women consumed 5 grams of spinach extract per day, cravings for sweets decreased by 95%, cravings for chocolate decreased by 87%.
Another study in women suggests that 5 grams of spinach extract reduces cravings for snack foods, including those that are salty, sweet and fatty. However, there were no effects on calorie intake at a later buffet. The reduction in cravings may be because spinach extract promotes the release of glucagon-like peptide-1, which acts on the food reward system.
No side effects or safety issues have been noted with the use of spinach extract; temporary reductions in insulin levels and increases in blood sugar levels are the only significant changes in biomarkers recorded during the study mentioned above.
Long-term effects on blood sugar readings appear not to be an issue, but further studies would be needed to determine the safety for type 2 diabetes patients considering the use spinach extract for weight control.
